Being a woman over 40 myself I thought I would highlight some of the women I like and admire who are over 40 and extremely successful. This is just a few that I chose over many that I follow and appreciate not only for their intelligence but for their individual strength, and voice in their chosen careers.
I decided since October is breast Cancer Awareness month that I would take this month to celebrate everything about women. I especially wanted to concentrate on women over 40, being in that age group myself I wanted to touch on different topics that women in this age group will understand and hopefully enjoy.
Vera Wang worked for Vogue magazine for 17 years. She then worked for Ralph Lauren for 2 years before resigning at 40 to become a bridal wear designer. You can find her clothing line at Kohl’s as well, at 68 she’s one of most recognizable names in Bridal wear.
Racheal Ray has become one of the most popular TV show hosts. I first started watching her back in 2005 on Food Network, back when she was doing the 30 minute meals. Rachael Ray changed how cooking shows were made and watched by her enthusiasm , fun words for food & likability. Being 49 she has managed to make a major mark on the cooking industry that most haven’t been able to copy.
Most people know her as the DKNY brand. Donna Karan started working for Anne Klein in the 1960’s until 1985 when she started the Donna Karan label. I am a big fan of her perfumes, my favorite being Cashmere Mist. Donna’s 68 a world traveler and has a love for yoga.
If you’ve ever spent much time on HGTV then I’m sure you’ve seen Candace Olsen there. With two design shows Divine Design and Candace Tells All, she really knows her stuff. I like that she doesn’t do the same things that other designers do, and she uses wallpaper in a lot of her designs. If you ever get the chance you should watch her show. Candace is 52 and shows no sign of stopping just yet.
Most people know who Tina Fey is. Having been on shows like Saturday Night Live & 30 Rock, at 47 she’s done it all in show business. Showing herself as an accomplished actress, comedian, writer and a producer. One of my favorite movies of hers is Date Night.
Jamie Lee Curtis-
Almost everyone knows who Jaime Lee Curtis is. With her famous parents & long list of movies she’s one of the top actresses of the 80′ and 90’s. What a lot people don’t know is that she is also the author of about 10 children’s books and is a blogger for The Huffington Post. Jamie is 58 and going strong, you’ve got to love that.
J.K. Rowling is one of the most recognizable names in film and books. Selling over 400 million copies of her Harry Potter series, and earning millions of dollars for her work. At 52 she’s still writing and contributing to charities for multiple sclerosis and poverty.
Alex is a chef at Butter restaurant in New York and is seen on multiple cooking shows on the Food Network, like Chopped, Iron Chef & The Best Thing I Ever Ate. She’s also the host of her show’s on the Cooking Channel Alex’s Day Off and The Cooking Loft. I really love watching her shows and her knowledge on food is very impressive. Alex is 45 and one of the most talented chefs on TV today.
Lorraine is a English television cook and a former model and has sold around a million books in the UK alone. Having had three television shows on BBC, her own retail outlet in London where she sells her baked goods and over 5 cookbooks. Lorraine’s 44 and one of my favorite’s to watch.
No list of successful women over 40 would be complete without a mention to Oprah Winfrey. Oprah is 63 and done just about everything you can imagine in her career and in her life. Being a talk show host, actress, producer and the CEO of her OWN network, she’s shown women what can be accomplished with hard work and not being afraid of taking a few risks in our career paths.
What I can tell you
Being over 40 is not a bad thing or an end to anything, in fact it’s just the beginning of the next half of your life. You can do whatever you want really. Maybe change careers, start a new one, or maybe travel the world. If 40 is the new 30 then that would make 50 the new 40 wouldn’t it? So relax, breathe we’ve got this.
One thing I wanted to add is that the list of women above are not only successful in business they are all published Authors, which to me makes them even more impressive.
